What Costa Rica Taught Me About Life

Hello my friends,

I just returned from Costa Rica, and I feel changed in a way that’s hard to put into words—but I want to try.

The heart of Costa Rican culture revolves around pura vida. Literally translated, it means “pure life,” but culturally it’s so much more. It’s a way of living that values family, friendships, community, the environment, animals, quality food, shared experiences, and time spent in nature. Gratitude isn’t something they practice occasionally—it’s woven into everyday life.

One of the most moving things I witnessed happened every single evening. About an hour before sunset, people would gather at the beach. Families, friends, kids, neighbors, travelers. Smiling, talking, swimming, playing, sharing food, telling stories from the day. As the sun began to set, everyone turned toward it together. And when it finally disappeared, the entire beach erupted into applause. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

No phones. No rush. No constant consumption. Just presence.

Stray dogs wandered freely along the beach—well fed, loved, and cared for by the community. Almost like shared pets. Neighbors hung ropes between houses so monkeys could safely cross roads without getting hurt. Before the rainy season, people worked together to clear ditches and prepare the land. It was inspiring to witness what happens when people truly care—for each other and for the place they live.

On a much smaller (but very practical) note, the trip also reminded me how important certain products are to me when I travel.

Even though I don’t have acne-prone skin, I always pack Clean Sweep Toner—and I was so glad I did. I got a small, strange bump (almost like a boil) and used it consistently to dry it up. It also worked beautifully to soothe mosquito bites.

Beauty Balm saved me when I got a little too much sun (as it always does). I packed a 2 oz Face Cream, which doubled as body lotion—one less thing to bring. Deodorant came in handy in an unexpected way, helping calm some itchy feet from going barefoot constantly (probably TMI, but real life!). Face Wash doubled as body wash. And Age Defying Tonic lived in the refrigerator and came to the beach with me as a cooling mist when the sun felt intense.

One thing I didn’t expect was how dry it would be. It was the dry season, and my skin felt it. I ended up using everything—Face Cream, Beauty Balm, Barrier Defense, and Age Defense—to combat the dryness. Thank goodness I had them all with me.

Travel has a way of reminding us what truly matters—and what we genuinely rely on. This trip reinforced so much for me, both personally and in how I think about Simple Body.

If anyone wants information on where I stayed, what I loved, or has questions about Costa Rica, please reach out. I’m always happy to share.

I also wanted to let you know we just opened up new days for our Skincare Consultations making them more accessible for you! Monday through Thursday and Saturdays 10-4. No excuses, let's get yours booked! :)

Sending you so much love and a little pura vida energy today.
