I get this question in the shop at least twice a week. Someone will pick up a stick of our deodorant, turn it over, read the ingredients, and look up with a slightly skeptical face. "But does it actually work? I sweat a lot."
I love this question because it's the right one to ask. And the honest answer is one most brands won't give you, so let's just start there.
Natural deodorant is not antiperspirant. It's not trying to be.
Antiperspirant works by using aluminum compounds to plug your sweat glands. Sweat can't come out, so you stay dry. Natural deodorant doesn't do that — by design. There's no aluminum, no glandular blocking, no interfering with something your body is trying to do on purpose.
What a good natural deodorant does is handle the odor. Because here's the thing most people don't realize: sweat itself doesn't actually smell. What smells is what happens when bacteria on your skin start breaking sweat down. Neutralize the bacteria, absorb the moisture, and you can absolutely stay fresh — even if you're a heavy sweater.
So the real question isn't "does natural deodorant work for heavy sweat." It's "does natural deodorant control odor and dampness for a heavy sweater." And that answer is yes — as long as the formula is doing its job.
Where Most Natural Deodorants Fall Short
I've tested hundreds of natural deodorants over the past sixteen plus years. Some as research. Some as competitors. Some because a customer walked in and said "I tried this one and hated it, can you tell me why?"
The failure modes are almost always the same. Not enough active ingredients — a lot of so-called natural deodorants are mostly coconut oil and shea butter with various trending ingredients. Sometimes they feel and smell nice, but by mid-afternoon the odor is back. Or other issues people complain about are texture, staining, greenwashing or fragrance. There can be a host of issues that make you not want to try a "natural" deodorant, and quite frankly, I completely understand!
Odor control is only half the equation. If you're sweating heavily and the stick isn't pulling moisture, you end up damp — and damp skin plus bacteria equals the exact problem you were trying to solve. Great deodorant formulas need to have a moisture absorbing ingredient — enter corn starch or arrowroot. And finally, fragrance that is designed to mask odor instead of actual antibacterial ingredients that are designed to eliminate odor. If a deodorant is essentially perfume in a stick, you'll smell great for an hour and then smell worse. Has that ever happened to you? I know first-hand how embarrassing that can be!
How I Formulated Ours for Heavy Sweat
When I began working on a formula for our natural deodorant, I was really formulating for me first — and I run hot, I hike, I do yoga, I run around at work all day and I do not have patience for a product that quits by lunch. So the brief was: strong enough for a real day, gentle enough to use every day, and honest about what it is.
An odor-neutralizing base. Moisture-absorbing ingredients that keep the underarm actually dry, not just less wet. A small, intentional essential oil blend that adds real antibacterial support (not just scent). And enough of each active that the stick is doing something the moment you put it on — not two hours from now, once it "warms up."
The result is a deodorant that holds up to a full day for most people, and can be reapplied without irritation if you're pushing through a workout or a hot afternoon.
The Switch, Honestly
Here's the honest guidance I'd give anyone coming off an antiperspirant.
Give it two weeks. Your body has been told for years that it wasn't allowed to sweat if you've been using antiperspirant. When you take the aluminum away, there's a transition — usually about ten to fourteen days — where you might sweat more than normal and the odor might be stronger than normal. This is temporary. It's your lymph nodes draining. Even though you might want to, don't panic and run back to your old stick.
And rethink what "working" means. If your standard is "I will not sweat at all," no natural deodorant will meet that, and I'd gently push back on whether that's actually the standard you want. Sweat is doing something important. It's removing toxins and pollutants from the body, so you actually WANT your body to sweat! If your standard is "I want to feel fresh, not smell, and not get pit stains or rashes," a well-built natural formula will absolutely get you there.
The Short Answer
Does natural deodorant work for heavy sweat? Yes — the right one does. It won't stop the sweat, because it's not supposed to. But it will keep you from smelling, and if the formula is well-built, it'll keep you noticeably drier too.
If you've been burned by natural deodorants that didn't hold up, I get it. Try ours. If it doesn't work for you, tell me — I mean that. I read every email, and every reformulation we've done over the years has come from someone writing in with feedback I couldn't have gotten any other way.
xoxo,
