Botanical Face Oils, Explained: How to Choose the Right One for Your Skin

Here's what nobody tells you about face oils: they're not all the same. A single-ingredient oil does one job. A blend does another. An oil built around an active ingredient does something else entirely. Nobody explains the difference — so you end up picking whatever's trending instead of whatever your skin actually needs.

I formulate all three types, and I built each one to do a different job on purpose. Once you understand which category you're looking at, choosing the right botanical face oil for your skin stops being a guessing game.

The Three Categories of Botanical Face Oil

Before you look at a single product, it helps to know what you're actually comparing. Every face oil on the market typically falls into one of three buckets.

Single-Ingredient Oils

These are exactly what they sound like — one plant oil, nothing else added. No blending, no actives, no fragrance. They're the simplest formula you can buy, which makes them the most predictable for reactive or compromised skin. What you see on the label is genuinely all that's touching your face.

Blended Oils

A blend combines several plant oils chosen to work together — one might be lightweight and fast-absorbing, another richer and more occlusive, another included for its scent or antioxidant content. Blends are formulated for a broader outcome, usually deeper nourishment or a more complete fatty acid profile than any single oil provides on its own.

Active-Ingredient Oils

This category is built around one specific, targeted ingredient — something like bakuchiol or CoQ10 — carried in an oil base. The oil isn't just there to moisturize; it's the delivery system for an active doing more specific, visible work, usually around firmness, texture, or fine lines.

What Each Category Looks Like in Practice

I make one oil in each category, and matching yourself to the right one comes down to matching your skin's need to the formula's purpose.

Single-Ingredient: Pomegranate Facial Serum

Pomegranate Facial Serum is 100% certified organic pomegranate seed oil. Nothing else. It's rich in omega-5 fatty acids and naturally occurring antioxidants, and because there's nothing added, it's the oil I recommend most for skin that's reactive, compromised, or just tired of trying new things. If your skin is dry, sensitive, or aging and you want the simplest possible starting point, this is it.

Blended: Nightly Face Serum

The Nightly Face Serum combines olive, sesame, sweet almond, and golden jojoba oils with botanical extracts like neroli, lavender, and rose. Each oil brings something different to the blend, and together they're formulated to work overnight — softening rough patches, smoothing the look of fine lines, and helping rebuild the barrier while you sleep. This is the oil for dry or aging skin that wants more nourishment than a single oil can offer, and doesn't react to essential oils.

Active-Ingredient: Age Defense Serum

Age Defense Serum is built around bakuchiol, a plant-derived retinol alternative, carried alongside CoQ10, squalane, carrot root, and sea buckthorn. Research shows bakuchiol supports collagen production and softens the look of fine lines without the redness and peeling traditional retinol is known for — which makes it one of the easiest actives to actually stay consistent with. If visible aging, firmness, and texture are your priority, this is the category — and the oil — built for that.

How to Match Yourself to the Right One

Start with what your skin is asking for, not what's trending. Reactive or easily overwhelmed skin does best with a single-ingredient oil — start with Pomegranate Facial Serum. Dry or aging skin that's generally well-behaved can handle more complexity, which is where the Nightly Face Serum comes in. And if fine lines, firmness, and texture are the concern, the active-ingredient category — Age Defense Serum — is formulated specifically for that job.

You don't have to pick just one forever, either. Plenty of my customers rotate — Pomegranate on nights their skin feels reactive, Age Defense Serum the rest of the week.

How to Actually Use a Face Oil

This is where most people go wrong, and it's an easy fix:

  • Apply to clean, slightly damp skin — oil seals in water, so it works better when there's water there to seal in
  • Use 4 to 6 drops, warmed first between your palms
  • Press and massage in, rather than rubbing
  • Apply oils as your last step at night, or under moisturizer in the morning if your skin runs dry

Here's the insider trick I give most of my Colorado customers: if your skin still feels tight by mid-morning even after oil, you're applying it to dry skin. Mist your face with a toner or tonic first, then follow it with a heavier moisturizer, like our Vitamin C Beauty Balm. It will help lock in all the good nourishment you're getting in your facial oil. That one change makes a bigger difference than switching products ever does.

Your skin isn't broken, and it doesn't need ten more steps. It usually just needs the right category of oil, matched to the right job.

Skin That Feels Replenished, Not Heavy

If fine lines and a loss of firmness are what you're noticing most, our Age Defense Serum pairs bakuchiol with CoQ10 and squalane for a silky oil that absorbs fully and leaves skin feeling soft, supported, and visibly smoother — without the irritation of traditional retinol.
