At some point, a lot of women hit a wall with skincare. We might start seeing acne at 40, we might develop sensitive skin, we might see early signs of aging. To be honest, the skincare you used at 20, just won't cut it in your 40s.
Getting frustrated with your skin at 40 is totally normal! We know you haven't stopped caring. Usually it’s because the routine that used to feel easy now feels a little too much—or not like enough. Skin can get drier, more reactive, less predictable, and somehow still break out just to keep things interesting.
That’s why a simple skincare routine for women over 40 can be such a relief. Fewer products. Less guesswork. More intention. And honestly, better odds that you’ll stick with it long enough to actually see what helps.
The goal is not to do the bare minimum because your skin does not matter. It’s to focus on the steps that make the biggest difference: cleansing well, supporting hydration, protecting the barrier, and using one or two targeted products that fit what your skin is asking for now.
Why skin often changes after 40
Skin does not suddenly change on your 40th birthday, of course—but for many women, this is the decade when shifts become harder to ignore.
You may notice that your skin feels drier after cleansing. Fine lines look more obvious when your skin is dehydrated. Products you used to tolerate now feel a little harsh. You might even feel like your face looks tired faster than it used to, especially during stressful weeks, travel, weather changes, or hormonal transitions.
That does not mean you need a 10-step routine.
Usually it means your skin needs more support and less products.
A simple routine works well here because it helps you stay consistent. It also makes it much easier to figure out what your skin actually likes. When there are seven serums and three exfoliants in the mix, it gets pretty hard to know what is helping and what is just taking up counter space.
What a simple skincare routine should do
A good routine for women over 40 should do four things well:
1. Cleanse without stripping
You want clean skin, not tight skin. There’s a difference.
2. Add hydration
Hydration helps skin look fresher, softer, and more comfortable. It can also make dehydration lines look less obvious.
3. Support the skin barrier
This is one of the least flashy parts of skincare and one of the most important. A supported barrier helps skin hold onto moisture and stay calmer overall.
4. Address your main concern
That might be dryness, dullness, visible fine lines, uneven texture, sensitivity, or breakouts. The point is not to treat everything at once. It’s to choose your priority and build around that.
The easiest simple skincare routine for women over 40
If you want a place to begin, this is it.
Morning
Step 1: Gentle cleanse
In the morning, some women do best with a light cleanse while others only need a rinse, especially if skin is dry or sensitive. The goal is to freshen the skin without taking too much from it before the day even starts. I love our Lavender Foaming Face Wash, it's a silky foam that does a great job of cleansing, but leaves my skin feeling moist, not dry.
Step 2: Tonic
This step is often overlooked, which is a shame because it can make a big difference. A well-formulated tonic (which is similar to a toner) helps reintroduce hydration after cleansing and prepares the skin for the next step. For women over 40, this can be especially helpful when skin feels dry, dull, or easily irritated. There are two different Tonics I recommend. One is our Brighten + Boost, which helps if you have red or irritated skin because it reintroduces ceramides into your skin--which is what keeps your skin strong. The second is our Age-Defying tonic that has a retinol alternative, called Bakuchiol that helps with aging skin.
Step 3: Serum
Use a serum that matches your main concern. If your skin feels tired, dehydrated, or like it has lost some bounce, a targeted serum can do a lot of heavy lifting without making the routine complicated. There are two that I love because an oil-based serum just doesn't feel like enough moisture for my skin. So, I mix our Barrier Defense Serum with our Age Defense Serum. That way I'm getting maximum nutrients for my skin as well as hydrating AND moisturizing my skin!
Step 4: Moisturizer
A good moisturizer helps seal in hydration and keep skin feeling comfortable throughout the day. That's why our Face Cream stands out. It's the only moisturizer I've ever used that feels like it lasts ALL DAY LONG for even the most dehydrated skin. Now, it's sort of a different story at night, I like a little thicker, heavier moisturizer so I use our Beauty Balm at night. It has Vitamin C, Sea Buckthorn and other nourishing emollients that leave my skin feeling as soft as a baby's bottom!
Step 5: Sunscreen
This is the daytime non-negotiable. If you’re trying to support healthy aging, daily sunscreen matters more than most people want to hear—but there it is. If you're like me, you don't like the white cast that most sunscreens leave on your skin. That's why I've made the switch to "Think" natural Sun Serum. It goes on more like skincare and dries completely clear. It also leaves a nice, natural glow to my skin!
Evening
Step 1: Cleanse well
At night, remove sunscreen, makeup, oil, and the day’s buildup with a cleanser that leaves skin clean but still comfortable. At night you may want to consider double cleansing, because sunscreen and makeup can be particularly challenging to remove with any water-based cleanser. Our Cleansing Oil is amazing because it doesn't sting or burn eyes! Plus it leaves your skin feeling super soft!
Step 2: Toner or tonic
This is a nice way to add water-based hydration back into the skin after cleansing. Choose a Toner only if your skin is oily--which let's be honest...in Colorado we almost never see oily skin! haha!
Step 3: Serum
Night is often the best time for your more targeted support step.
Step 4: Moisturizer or balm
Finish with something that helps the skin feel replenished and supported overnight.
That’s it. Four to five steps depending on the time of day. No huge routines required.
How to choose the right products for your skin now
This is where routines become personal.
Because “over 40” is not really a skin type. One woman may be dealing with dryness and sensitivity. Another may still have combination skin. Another may be noticing more visible fine lines but also breakouts around hormonal shifts. So the real question is not just your age. It’s what your skin is doing.
Here’s a simple way to think about it.
If your skin feels dry or tight
Focus on gentle cleansing, hydrating toner or tonic, a supportive serum, and a moisturizer that helps hold moisture in.
If your skin looks dull or tired
Look for products that support smoother texture and better hydration. Dull skin is often not just an “aging” issue—it can be a sign that skin is thirsty, stressed, or not shedding evenly.
If your skin has become more sensitive
Simplify first. Pull back on exfoliation and strong actives. Choose calming, barrier-friendly products and let your skin settle before adding anything extra.
If you’re still acne-prone
You are not alone. Adult skin can be both breakout-prone and dehydrated at the same time, which feels deeply unfair but is very common. In that case, go for balance: gentle cleansing, lightweight hydration, and clarifying products that do not leave skin raw.
What not to do when building a routine after 40
This part matters.
A lot of women end up with complicated routines because they are trying to be diligent. They read, they research, they add one promising product after another—and before long the routine is crowded, expensive, and a little exhausting.
Here are a few traps worth avoiding:
Do not assume stronger means better
If your skin is becoming drier or more reactive, stronger products can backfire fast.
Do not try to fix everything at once
Choose your biggest concern first. Hydration? Sensitivity? Fine lines? Uneven texture? Start there.
Do not over-exfoliate
This is a common one. When skin looks dull, the temptation is to scrub or exfoliate more. But a tired-looking complexion can just as easily be dehydrated or barrier-stressed.
Do not keep switching products every few days
Skin usually needs a little consistency before you can judge what is working.
The best routine is the one you’ll actually follow
You know what gets overlooked in skincare advice? Real life.
Most women are not standing in a softly lit bathroom every night with 40 uninterrupted minutes and a playlist. Sometimes you are tired. Sometimes the kids need something. Sometimes work ran late. Sometimes you just want to wash your face and be done.
That’s exactly why simple skincare routines work.
They lower the barrier to consistency. They make it easier to show up for your skin on ordinary days, not just ideal ones. And over time, consistency tends to do more for skin than the occasional burst of skincare ambition.
A simple routine can still be effective
This is worth saying clearly because the beauty world loves to make things sound more complicated than they need to be.
A simple skincare routine for women over 40 can still be strategic. It can still be thoughtful. It can still support visible improvement in hydration, smoothness, comfort, and overall skin appearance.
Simple does not mean lazy. It means edited.
And honestly, that is often what mature skin responds to best—less noise, more support.
Signs your routine is working
Not every good routine creates instant drama. Usually the wins look more like this:
- Your skin feels less tight after cleansing
- Dry patches become less obvious
- Fine lines caused by dehydration look softer
- Makeup goes on more smoothly
- Redness feels less frequent
- Your skin looks calmer and more balanced overall
Sometimes the first sign that your routine is working is just that your skin stops complaining all the time.
That counts.
Final thoughts
You do not need to chase every trend. You do not need a shelf full of products to care for your skin well. You need a routine that respects where your skin is now and supports it consistently.
That’s usually where the good stuff starts—not in doing more, but in doing what matters most.
xoxo,
