Why We Formulate With Floral Waters Instead of Just Distilled Water

If you’ve ever turned a skincare bottle around and peeked at the ingredients, you’ve probably noticed that the first ingredient is often water. And most of the time, that means plain old distilled water. Nothing wrong with it—it’s clean, neutral, and gets the job done. But here’s the thing: at Simple Body, we don’t stop at “good enough.” Instead, we use floral waters (sometimes called and similar to hydrosols) as the base for many of our products, and there’s a reason your skin will thank us for it.

What Exactly Are Floral Waters?

Floral waters are created during the steam distillation of plants and flowers. Think of them as the gentler, water-based sibling to essential oils. They carry the same plant compounds, but in a much softer, skin-friendly way. While distilled water is blank and lifeless, floral waters bring something extra—trace vitamins, minerals, and soothing plant chemistry.

Why Floral Waters Beat Distilled Water

Using floral waters means that every step of your skincare routine carries benefits. Here’s how they stack up against distilled water:

  • Extra nutrients, not just filler
Distilled water adds hydration but nothing else. Floral waters, on the other hand, come packed with skin-loving properties from the plant they’re derived from—rose for calming, chamomile for soothing, lavender for balancing. All of them add hydration which your skin needs!

  • Gentle aromatherapy built in
Without being overpowering, floral waters carry a subtle natural scent that can calm your nervous system while they calm your skin. It turns a routine into a little ritual. I have to admit, I am in love with the scent of our Chamomile Floral Water, which is why you will find it in our entire Sensitive Skin line. Not only does it smell wonderful, the chamomile helps calm sensitive, reactive skin. I love a good dual-purpose ingredient!

  • Skin affinity
Our skin is incredibly smart—it recognizes and responds better to plant chemistry than to something sterile and empty. That’s why formulas with floral waters often feel different.

  • Layered care
Think of it like cooking: you could make soup with plain water, or you could it in broth. The broth infuses flavor, depth, and nourishment. That’s what floral waters do for your skincare—they turn a formula from basic to purposeful.

Our Favorite Floral Waters in Skincare

We choose floral waters intentionally based on skin needs:

  • Rose Floral Water – calming, hydrating, perfect for dry or mature skin.

  • Chamomile Floral Water – soothing, reduces redness, loved by sensitive skin.

  • Lavender Floral Water – balancing and clarifying, great for acne-prone or combination skin.

Why It Matters

When you spend time and money on your skincare routine, shouldn’t every single ingredient be working for you? That’s why we won’t settle for plain distilled water. Floral waters bring synergy, nourishment, and a little plant magic into each bottle—helping your skin feel cared for, not just coated.
