Why Movement Helps Your Skin Look and Feel Better

We often talk about skincare in terms of what we put on our skin—cleansers, toners, serums, moisturizers. But healthy skin isn’t just about products. It’s also about how we care for the body underneath.

One of the most overlooked ways to support your skin naturally? Movement.

We’re not talking about intense workouts or hitting the gym five times a week (unless you love that). This is about regular, joyful movement—walking, stretching, dancing, yoga, gardening, hiking. Moving your body in ways that feel good to you.

Turns out, your skin loves it.

1. Movement improves circulation—which means more nutrients for your skin

When you move, your heart rate goes up, and blood flow increases. That means more oxygen and nutrient-rich blood is delivered to your skin cells. This boost in circulation helps support collagen production, improves cell turnover, and gives your skin that natural “lit-from-within” look. My favorite activity? Walking with a weighted vest! I love starting my day with a brisk 40-60 minute walk. Not only does it allow me to clear my head, I plan my day, I breathe in fresh air, I sweat a little and my face always feels flush after. The “flush” is what bring fresh oxygen, nutrients, collegan and elastin to my skin! So, I’m always pushing myself to move fast enough that I feel my cheeks getting pink! 🙂 It’s truly one of the most enjoyable times of my day!

That fresh, post-walk flush? That’s your skin saying thank you.

2. Sweating helps your skin detox (yep, really)

There’s a lot of confusion about the word “detox,” but here’s the truth: sweating is one of your body’s natural ways to release built-up impurities.

When you sweat, your pores open up, and toxins like dirt, oil, and environmental buildup can make their way out. As long as you wash your face afterward, sweating from gentle movement or exercise can actually help reduce congestion and dullness over time. I LOVE getting into an infared sauna for this reason! It’s sometimes challenging for me to build sweat during a workout. It seems like my body needs more heat to sweat. So, a sauna is the perfect solution for that! Let those pores sweat and breathe!

Have acne-prone skin? Be sure to either cleanse your skin after your workout, or use our Clean Sweep Toner to remove sweat to avoid post-workout breakouts! We love our Lavender Foaming Face Wash for acne-prone skin!

3. Movement supports lymphatic flow and skin tone

Unlike your circulatory system, your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump—it relies on you to move it. And it’s crucial for immune health and skin clarity. Regular movement helps keep your lymph fluid flowing, reducing puffiness, supporting detox, and minimizing inflammation. One of the best ways to move lymph fluid? Jumping! That includes playing on a trampoline! If you’ve got one in the back yard…join your kids in an early morning jumping session! How fun would that be?

Things like walking, bouncing, or even facial massage (yes, lymph flow in your face!) can make such a difference in how your skin looks and feels. We also love our nightly Gua Sha ritual for moving lymphatic fluid! If you order a Jade Gua Sha tool from our website, it comes with a handy postcard on what oils to use with your tool as well as a helpful diagram of how to move lymphatic fluid in your face. If you do this nightly…even for just 5 minutes, you’ll wake up with less puffy skin and a visible glow!

Bonus: pairing this with our Pomegranate Facial Serum or Wrinkle Defense Serum makes for the perfect glide in your daily gua sha or facial massage practice.

4. Moving your body helps manage stress—and stress shows up on your skin

We’ve all had those weeks where stress hits hard and our skin follows: breakouts, flare-ups, irritation, dullness. Movement is one of the most effective ways to bring down cortisol levels, rebalance your nervous system, and increase serotonin—all of which support your skin’s ability to heal and repair. Activities like meditation, listening to relaxing music, practicing pranayama (breathing), and light exercise can all help manage your stress. It doesn’t have to be intense. A short walk. A few yoga stretches. Dancing around the kitchen. Your body—and your skin—don’t care how you move, only that you do! My favorite way to relax is to listen to “Forest Bathing” on Spotify! It is so soothing for your parasympathetic nervous system!

5. Movement keeps everything flowing—inside and out

When you move consistently, your digestion improves, your hormones regulate more smoothly, and your body gets better at maintaining balance. And because your skin is often the first place imbalances show up, regular movement is one of the most natural ways to care for your complexion from the inside out.

Bottom line?

Movement isn’t about burning calories or chasing some external goal. It’s about keeping your body (and skin) supported, resilient, and well.

If you’ve been looking for a sign to stretch, take a walk, or finally try that Pilates class—this is it. Your body already knows how to take care of your skin. You just have to move with it.
