Some myths are harmless. Like the idea that cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis (it doesn’t). But in skincare? Some of these old beliefs are doing real damage—causing people to overdo, overspend, or overlook what their skin actually needs.
Let’s talk about some skincare myths that I’m going to BUST….right here, right now!
Myth #1: “If your skin feels tight after cleansing, it’s working.”
Nope. That squeaky-clean, tight feeling isn’t a sign of effectiveness—it’s a red flag. It usually means your cleanser has stripped your skin’s natural oils and disrupted your skin barrier. And when your skin barrier is compromised, all sorts of issues show up: dryness, breakouts, irritation, redness. You can actually develop sensitive skin. Using cleansers that aren’t pH balanced can be the root cause for this. Make sure you’re using a cleanser that is pH balanced!
A better rule? Your skin should feel soft, somewhat moisturized, and refreshed after cleansing—not tight or squeaky.
If your skin is feeling dry or tight after cleansing: Try our Chamomile or Rose Foaming Face Wash, which are both pH-balanced and made with coconut-derived cleansers that clean gently without stripping.
Myth #2: “People with Acne Prone skin shouldn’t use products with oil”
This one’s been around forever—especially for people with acne-prone or oily skin. But it’s not that simple.
Many plant-based oils are non-comedogenic, meaning they don’t clog pores. In fact, oils like jojoba, rosehip, and squalane can actually help balance oil production, calm inflammation, and strengthen the skin barrier.
It’s not about avoiding oil—it’s about using the right ones.
Where to start: Our Oil Cleanser is made with oils that are non-comedogenic and help gently cleanse while keeping microbiome intact. This is especially important for acne-prone or inflamed skin.
Myth #3: “You need a separate product for every part of your face.”
Under-eye cream. Neck Cream. Sound familiar?
Truth is, a smartly formulated product can work beautifully across your entire face. If your skin is healthy and your products are well-balanced, there’s no need for a dozen targeted treatments. (Unless you love having them, of course.)
Tip: Our high-performance serums—like Eye Defense or Wrinkle Defense—can be used all over the face, not just in one tiny area.
Myth #4: “If it tingles or burns, it means it’s working.”
Please, no. Sensation isn’t the same as effectiveness–unless we’re talking about enzymes! Tingling can mean a product is too strong for your skin, has an irritating pH level, or contains harsh ingredients.
There’s a difference between a light active feeling (like from fruit acids or enzymes) and a full-on sting. If your face is turning red, itchy, hot or blotchy, that’s not a good sign—it’s your skin telling you it’s overwhelmed and possibly having a reaction.
Instead: Start with gentle exfoliants (like our Exfoliate + Glow Tonic) and pay attention to how your skin reacts over time, if any irritation occurs with a product, discontinue use immediately.
Myth #5: “More is more.”
This might be the biggest myth of all.
More products, more steps, more actives doesn’t always equal better skin. In fact, piling on too much—especially without knowing how ingredients interact—can damage your barrier and throw your skin into a constant state of reactivity.
The truth? A well-balanced, simple routine with high-quality ingredients almost always outperforms a 12-step routine packed with filler and friction.
The takeaway: You don’t need more. You just need better.
Final Thoughts
Skincare should be effective, but it should also feel right. It should make sense. And it should work with your skin—not leave you guessing.
If you’ve fallen for any of these myths in the past, don’t stress. Most of us have. But now you know better—and your skin is about to thank you for it.
xoxo
